For the past couple months I've been renting a scoot to get around Chiang Mai and now it's time to buy a bike. I'm conflicted on whether to just go the easy route and pick up a Honda Air Blade or Yamaha Nuovo, or go all out and order a Boxer 250. I'm well aware that these are two different animals, each with their own pros and cons (for me it's basically balancing convenience vs enjoyment). However, I'm not seeking help there -- that's a personal decision I need to sort out myself.
Even though any of the bikes in question are pretty cheap by U.S. standards, it's a sizable investment for me. I'm not quite sure how long I'll be staying in Thailand -- could be 6 months, could be years -- so resale value is a factor.
There's no doubt I can sell one of those scooters and get back close to what I paid. But how about a Boxer? I've had a hard time finding any used Boxer 250's listed anywhere and have no clue what they might go for (which I take as a sign there are many happy owners out there). Are these bikes so obscure to people that they drop 50% in value the instant you drive out of the dealership?
